History

Trevi Fountain is the most beautiful and most spectacular fountain in Rome. Measuring some 20 meters in width by 26 meters in height, Trevi Fountain is also the largest fountain in the city. Millions of people visit it every year to make a wish.

Trevi was constructed in 1762 by Nicola Salvi and was finalized by Giuseppe Pannini. It was officially opened and inaugurated on 22 May by Pope Clement XIII. It is also the largest Baroque fountain in Rome with almost 80,000,000 liters of water circulating through the system every day. In 2014–15 the fountain was closed for a major renovation. Interestingly enough, the name of Trevi derives from Tre Vie (three ways), since the fountain was the meeting point of three streets. You can see hundreds of tourists throwing coins into the fountain every day. According to legend, those who toss coins into Trevi Fountain waters will return to Rome. The coins that are thrown into its water are collected daily and donated to charity. The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Roman Holiday, Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, the eponymous Three Coins in the Fountain, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, and Sabrina Goes to Rome.
